Fixed Retainers: A Retention Option Not Everyone Offers

A fixed retainer is a thin wire bonded directly to the back of the teeth, usually the lower (and sometimes upper) front teeth. Because it stays in place around the clock, there’s no removing it, no losing it, and no forgetting to wear it.

Clear Retainers

Clear retainers (sometimes called Essix retainers) are custom, nearly invisible trays that fit snugly over the teeth — similar to a clear aligner. They’re a popular choice because they’re:

Hawley Retainers

The Hawley retainer is the classic removable retainer — an acrylic base with a thin wire across the front of the teeth. If a Hawley retainer suits your treatment plan, Dr. Rob or Dr. Frank will discuss that option with you directly.

How long do I need to wear a retainer? Retention timelines vary by patient, but many orthodontists recommend nightly wear of a removable retainer indefinitely, since teeth can shift at any age. Fixed retainers stay in place continuously and are often left in for several years or longer.

Can I switch from a removable retainer to a fixed retainer later? In many cases, yes. If you’re finding it hard to stay consistent with a removable retainer, ask Dr. Rob or Dr. Frank whether a fixed retainer makes sense for your situation.

Do fixed retainers affect brushing and flossing? You’ll brush as usual, and flossing will take a little extra care using a floss threader or interdental brush around the wire. Our team will show you exactly how during your appointment.

What happens if my retainer breaks or a fixed retainer comes loose? Give us a call right away. Left unaddressed, a broken or displaced retainer can allow teeth to shift, so it’s best to have it repaired or replaced promptly.
