What Is Invisalign?

When most parents are exploring dental treatment options for their kids, they arrive at the option of traditional braces almost immediately. This is the solution that the vast majority of people are already familiar with and, to a certain extent, they haven’t really changed much over the years.

If you select traditional braces for your kids, a series of metal brackets will be attached to each one of their teeth that are then connected together via metal wires. Adjustments to the friction generated by those wires will shift your child’s teeth into the intended position over a period of approximately two years.

Invisalign, on the other hand, works very differently – but is every bit as effective. Here, your child will wear a series of clear plastic aligners that are made using precise measurements of their teeth. Every few weeks, they’ll change to the next set of aligners in the sequence – thus shifting their teeth into the desired position over the course of their treatment. Our team typically sees children for Invisalign at age 7 or older.

How Is Invisalign for Kids Different Than Invisalign for Adults?

The technology at the heart of Invisalign really doesn’t change when you’re talking about a child going through treatment versus an adult. The system itself may be more effective in kids, however, because their teeth and jaw are still in the process of development.

This means that if your child is good about taking direction and is vigilant about keeping their trays in all day and night, their treatment will likely be every bit as successful as it would be on an adult counterpart – if not more so!

What Are the Benefits of Invisalign for Kids?

One of the biggest benefits that comes along with getting Invisalign for your children has to do with the fact that they can continue to eat the foods that they love. Truly, there are no dietary restrictions to speak of – all they have to do is remove their aligners before each meal and put them back in again when they’re done.

Likewise, Invisalign brings with it an important peace-of-mind in that you don’t need to worry about broken brackets or wires like you do with traditional braces. Provided that your child doesn’t actually lose the aligners, there are very few things that can actually go wrong.

Finally, it’s very easy for children to brush and floss their teeth as they normally would – something that can’t be said for traditional braces.

Why Should I Consider Invisalign for My Child?

You should absolutely consider Invisalign for your child because it’s a far more comfortable treatment option than traditional braces. Likewise, they can be removed for special events like picture day at school.

How Should My Child Care for Their Invisalign Aligners?

Caring for Invisalign aligners is simple – all you have to do is remove them from your mouth and brush them the same way you would your teeth.

Can My Child Still Participate in Sports?

Yes! Your child can absolutely still participate in all the sports they love. They’ll just need to wear a mouth guard during play for an extra level of protection, but they should probably already be doing that anyway.

What Can My Child Eat With Invisalign?

As stated, there are virtually no dietary restrictions to speak of with Invisalign – meaning that your child can continue to eat all of the foods that they love. Just be sure to have them brush and floss their teeth after a meal for the best results.
