As a parent, you want the best for your child—including a healthy, confident smile. But one of the most common questions parents ask is: “When should my child get braces?”
At Montgomery, Prattville & Pike Road Pediatric Dentistry & Family Orthodontics, we believe the right timing can make a big difference in your child’s orthodontic journey. While every child is unique, there are some general guidelines that can help parents understand when it’s best to begin treatment.
The First Orthodontic Evaluation: Age 7
The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that children receive their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. By this age, most children have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth, which allows an orthodontist to spot potential issues early, such as:
- Crowding or spacing problems
- Bite misalignments (overbite, underbite, crossbite)
- Problems with jaw growth or tooth eruption
- Habits like thumb-sucking that may affect dental development
An evaluation at this age doesn’t always mean treatment is needed right away. In fact, many kids simply need to be monitored until the ideal time for braces or aligners.
Early Treatment (Phase 1): Ages 7–10
In some cases, early intervention—also known as Phase 1 treatment—is recommended. This type of treatment typically takes place between ages 7–10 and may involve limited braces, expanders, or other appliances.
Phase 1 treatment can:
- Guide jaw growth for a better bite
- Create space for permanent teeth to come in properly
- Reduce the risk of more severe problems later
- Improve oral function and appearance during critical developmental years
Not every child needs Phase 1 treatment, but for those who do, it can make Phase 2 (full braces) shorter and more effective.
Comprehensive Treatment (Phase 2): Ages 11–14
The most common time for braces is during the early teen years, once most or all permanent teeth have come in. This is known as Phase 2 treatment and typically takes place between ages 11–14.
At this stage, orthodontists can:
- Correct crooked or crowded teeth
- Align the bite for improved function
- Enhance smile aesthetics during the teenage years
- Provide results that will last into adulthood
Because the body is still growing during this time, teeth often move more easily, making treatment faster and more predictable.
Signs Your Child May Need Braces
While the best way to know is through an orthodontic evaluation, here are a few signs that may indicate your child could benefit from braces:
- Early or late loss of baby teeth
- Difficulty chewing or biting
- Mouth breathing
- Thumb-sucking or other oral habits
- Crowded, misplaced, or protruding teeth
- Jaw shifting or popping sounds
- Speech difficulties related to bite or alignment
If you notice any of these issues, it’s a good idea to schedule a consultation sooner rather than later.
